Overview

The HSPT (High School Placement Test) is a 2-hour, 30-minute exam required for 8th graders seeking entrance into Catholic high schools. The test is administered by individual schools under the authority of their local diocese. Students may take the HSPT only once, and parents are encouraged to contact schools about specific test dates. The exam consists of the following sections:

  • Verbal: 60 questions in 16 minutes, synonyms, antonyms, analogies, logical reasoning, word does not belong
  • Quantitative: 52 questions in 30 minutes, series, value comparison, geometry, arithmetic, fractions, percentage, algebra, exponents, etc.
  • (Break: 5 minutes)
  • Reading: 62 questions in 25 minutes, 40 passage-based, 22 vocabulary
  • Mathematics: 64 questions in 45 minutes, on math topics including: ratios, probability, geometry, arithmetic, fractions, percentage, algebra, exponents, etc.
  • (Break: 2 minutes)
  • Language: 60 questions in 25 minutes
  • Paragraph revision, 40 grammar, 10 spelling, 10 composition
