The ACT is a three hour and thirty minute exam accepted by all major colleges and universities. Compared to the SAT, the ACT consists of more straightforward questions and features score choice in reporting. It is comprised of five sections:
- English Test: one 45 minute section which tests grammar usage and rhetorical skills
- Mathematics Test: one 60 minute section which measures the mathematical skills taught throughout the course of a typical high school curriculum
- Reading Test: one 35 minute test which measures critical reading skills using a variety of reading passages
- Science Test: one 35 minute test which challenges students to answer questions based on technical passages and the interpretation of charts and graphs
- Writing Sample: an optional 30 minute writing test measures the ability to plan and write a short directed essay on a given topic
